Must watch Historical K Dramas of the 2000's


The Korean wave took over Sri Lanka in 2013 with Sujatha Diyani. It was a big hit and just like Oshin it is the pinnacle of Dubbed dramas in Sri Lanka.  Today I am going to give you guys a list of must watch Historical K-Dramas.

11)    Dae Jang Guem / Jewel of the Palace (2003)

This story follows a young girl who aspires to be the head chef in the King’s Palace. Due to destiny she takes a liking for medicine. This takes her on a long journey which finally leads to her being the first doctor to operate a person in Korea. This story shows determination, hard work, friendship, gender equality,true love and happiness.

2)    Dong Yi/ Jewel of the Crown (2010)

Done by the same director of Jewel of the Palace this follows the story of a low maid. Dong Yi was just a servant in the Music Department before she fell in love with King Sukjong. She later becomes the mother of one of the greatest Kings of Korea King Yeongjo. This story shows us that caste or class does not matter for greatness and that the only thing that mattered was being yourself. Dong Yi was the kind of girl who spread love and happiness to everyone and due to this she was blessed. King Sukjong loved her because of her honesty. This story shows true love, happiness, gender equality, friendship and determination and honesty.

   3)Yi San/ Wind of the Palace(2007)

This follows the story of Yi San the grandson of Dong Yi. He later became one of the greatest Kings of Korea King Jeongjo. This follows the story of a Prince who had enemies in the Palace. His father Crown Prince Sado was killed by his Grandfather King Yeongjo. It of how a young Prince grows up to be an intelligent good King. Of course there is a love triangle as all KDramas.

4)    King’s Doctor/Horse Doctor (2012)

Follows the story of Baek Kwang-hyun and how from being a horse doctor he becomes the King’s doctor. It shows his low for his childhood friend who is a high caste lady. This story shows sacrifices for love, determination, hard work, and honesty, a lot of blood, friendship and loyalty. This too is from the say director of the above 3 dramas.

5)    Jumong (2006)


This story follows Jumong and how he becomes the ruler of the kingdom of Goguryo. It shows love, sacrifice and honesty. This is a hugely popular drama around the world. It shows how a cowardly young man could become a great ruler with intelligence and strength.  

6)    Goddess of Fire (2013)


Follows the story of Jung Yi and how she becomes the first ceramic artist of Korea. She was later taken to Japan as a prisoner during the Korea Japan war during the Josean Dynasty. It shows her love for Prince Gwanghae. Kim Beom acts in this drama. He is the other lover in the love triangle. It shows how sacrifices should be made for the safety your love ones and country. It promotes gender equality and how hard work makes anything possible.

7)    Queen Seondeok (2009)

Lets just say this is an awesome story. It show show extereme power and hunger for power can destroy you. The Silla Royal family Princess Deokman is the only one with her twin sister who can stop the evil power hungry Lady Mishil.  She is the only one who can create a better future for the Three Kingdoms. This drama shows love, sisterly bond, revenge and sacrifice.

8)    Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010)


The drama is about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to get into the most prestigious university of Josean era. It shows friendship at its best, love and youth. It shows how caste or class or titles are never important but who you are and what you end up doing is important.

9)    Night Watch Man’s Journal (2014)

This is a story about a rebellious Prince who takes up duties as a night watchman. He has the ability to see ghosts and so he saves his people from them. Every night for him and his group is a fight for survival. In this process the Prince falls in love and the qualities of a great leader start to come out. It is a story of how a rebellious Price becomes mature with experience to understand the responsibilities of a Prince. Friendships, bravery and love are major themes.

10)    Painter of the Wind(2008)

This is a story of a girl who goes to the Academy of Painting in the Josean era when no women was allowed in it. She disguises herself as a man and goes to find who killed her father. Her mentor falls in love with her but he takes to future step towards a relationship because such a relationship is impossible. A cute story filled with determination, friendship and hard work.

11)    Moon embracing the Sun(2012)

This cute story is about two Princes who are the two Suns as they both are to be Princes. Only one of them can be King. They both fall in love with the same girl. This girl was a former court lady who was suppose to marry Prince Hwon – the first Sun but she is also loved by his elder half brother Prince Yang –Myung – the second Sun. So this girl is the Moon. This story is a must watch. You can only understand it when you watch it. It shows loyalty, love and sacrifice and most of all brotherly love/bond.

12)Princess's Man(2011)

A good love story similar to Romeo and Juliet. This follows the story of two noble families who hate each other but how the two younger generation boy and girl fall in love.The boy's dad is killed by the girls dad . He is on a mission to take revenge but will he be able to forger his love for her?  They are ready to sacrifice everything for love ...even themselves. 


These are my top 11 dramas. May be you could add some yourselves. These are only a few of the many good historical Korean Dramas out there. Of course there are more Historical KDrama coming which I haven't seen. But what dramas would you add to this list?
