Well there are two Indian dramas going on prime time in two
of our favorite TV channels. Sirasa TV
started with Diya Aur Bhati Hum / Swapna about a year ago. On the other hand
Hiru TV also started showing Jodha Akbar this year. Both these dramas are in
the “prime time” of Sri Lankan television viewing times – 8.30pm every weekday.
I myself started off with Swapna and I quite liked the love between Suraj and
Swapna/Sadhya.
We went along with the story of a young woman who was forced to marry a man whom she didn’t love. She was forced to forget her dream of becoming a policewoman. With time her husband realizes her dream and helps her achieve it. Of course along the way there are many obstacles especially their own family (Rathi family) and their monster of a mother.
Look at that face she looks like a mad woman!! |

On the other hand we have the epic love story of the
greatest King in the Mughal Dynasty and his Rajpuit Princess/Wife- Jodha. Jodha’s hatred towards Jalal Udin/ King Akbar
turns into love as she becomes the Queen Mother of the Mughal Kingdom.
Okay. In recent time throughout Swapna/ Diya Aur Bhati Hum’s
plot we see stupidity. I mean as a modern Sri Lanka audience we have moved away
from the extremely conservative patriarchal society long ago. Also we have seen
wonderful mother in laws and beautiful family lives all over the world. With
this when Swapna spreads the negative image of a god damn family which is never
happy we get quite mad. I mean no matter what Swapna her mother in law always
hates her. Moreover that woman is so jealous that Suraj loves Swapna so much
and she seems to take revenge from them. In that family even if a baby poops on
the floor it is always Swapna’s fault. Hilariously recently they have this
thing where Swapna’s future as a policewoman depends on three clay pots. For
every mistake she makes a pot is broken and her chances to be a policewomen are
reduced. I mean come on that is so unrealistic. She could easily get divorced and
get a job with her college degree and win her dream, but she doesn’t and this
annoys me. We live in the 21st century and this is what we see.
Jodha Akbar these days has a very engaging plot of how Jodha
saves the King from a woman who wants to poison and kill him. This drama has a
very loving mother in law who wants Jodha and Jalal to lead a loving life. She
will do anything for Jodha’s and Jalal’s happiness. Moreover Jodha is a skilled
martial artist with great knowledge and ability in sword fighting and archery. She
is beautiful, talented and extremely skilled. To add to this she is a strong
woman unlike Swapna, who half the time look like a mad woman always looking for
Suraj’s help and ever ready to give up. Jodha on the other hand will give her
life to save the King; she pretty much is a “one woman army” for Jalal/Akbar.
Of course she too faces problems but she faces them and she never gives up. She
indeed is a role model for every woman out there.
Overall Jodha Akbar leaves us with a sense of satisfaction
which Diya Aur Bhati Hum/Swapna doesn’t leave you with. While Swapna only
leaves you stressing every day, Jodha Akbar relaxes you. Also the family net
around Jodha and Akbar/Jalal is strong and supportive unlike in Swapna where
everyone is backstabbing everyone else. Only Suraj and Swapna are the ideal
couple – so typical isn’t it. I believe if you want to enjoy what you watch
then you should choose Jodha Akbar. If you want to hate what you watch and see
trouble everyday then you should watch Diya Aur Bhati Hum/Swapna. Out of all this
Jodha Akbar stands out and right now I will give it 9/10 on my drama scale…while
giving Diya Aur Bhati Hum/ Swapna 3/10.
