My Girl

11:56 PM 0 Comments
My Girl on Swaranawahini every weekend at 7.00 in the night...

It was shown in Korea in 2005 and was very famous. A native of Jeju Island, Joo Yoo-rin lives with her father, who is addicted to gambling. Because of her father's debts, Yoo-rin has become particularly skilled at lying and grifting. When her father escapes the island to hide from his debtors, Yoo-rin is determined to support herself and clear up the debts by selling oranges illegally picked from a hotel orchard and working as a tour guide on the island. Then, one day, she meets Seol Gong-chan, the sole heir to the L'Avenue Hotel fortune.

To grant his grandfather's dying wish, Gong-chan employs Yoo-rin to act as his grandfather's long-lost granddaughter. Offering a monthly salary plus a bonus, he asks her to do what she does best—to put on an act. Not wishing to lie to a dying man, yet desperate for the money, Yoo-rin takes the offer and starts playing the long-lost granddaughter. Through a strange twist of fate, however, finding his granddaughter makes the grandfather so happy that he makes a complete recovery. Since they have claimed to be cousins, Gong-chan and Yoo-rin are forced to live together under one roof, and as time passes, the attraction between them grows. However, love is forbidden for these two, who must pass as cousins.

Main characters

A tour guide in charge of running mini tours in Jeju Island. Her father is a gambling addict, but despite all the debts that he runs up, Yoo-rin always finds a way to help repay them. She leads a below-average life but is happy as long as she has her father with her. Because of her father's gambling ways, she has had to move from country to country whenever her father runs from one place to another to avoid their debtors. This has in turn brought her the ability to converse fluently in Chinese and Japanese, which are of great help as a tour guide whenever she has to entertain tourists from China and Japan.

The only heir of the owner of L'Avenuel Hotel, which is one of the top hotels in Korea. His grandfather, Seol Woong, charges him with the duty of finding his granddaughter, who is Gong-chan's cousin. Seol Woong had disowned his own daughter, Gong-chan's aunt, when she decided to marry a man not of his choice. However, when Seol Woong had a change of heart and wished to accept his daughter back, an earthquake struck where his daughter lived, and since then, he has lost all contact with his kin. Perhaps to make amends for his own stubbornness, he wants to find his granddaughter and hopefully make things right.

The son of one of the major shareholders of L'Avenuel Hotel, and Gong-chan's best friend. Unlike Gong-chan who is responsible and hardworking, Jung-woo is a flirt who is known to have many girlfriends.
Gong-chan's ex-girlfriend. A rising star in the tennis world, she returns to Korea hoping to reconcile with Gong-chan.

Daskon episode 16 recap

11:42 PM 0 Comments

Hi guys time for recap number 16. I'm in Matara for the holidays and enjoying life. This time in Sri Lanka people are more interested in the  presidential election than Christmas. Ok recap time.

Ok today princess arrives to the palace. Two  people watch this from far. One of them is the noble Lady's servant ans her friend and also Patiya Bandara's assistant. You could see that the King has sent a lot of money on this ceremony.

Daskon and the King are in the King's room and Daskon says I don't know about you but I'm going to see the Princess. I'm far to serious to see this Lady who you are not comparing with your girlfriend. The King just smiles and says Daskon you are the only one I can trust in this Palace and that is mainly because you are not someone from this country. Daskon smiles and says yes you can always trust the non Lankan. Saying this he leaves to see this so called beautiful woman. The Noble Lady's servant disguises herself as a Tamil woman and shouts at Daskon when she sees him but he doesn't hear as he is far to interested in see the Princess. Have to tell u guys that Daskon is far too interested in seeing this woman.....and unfortunately he is not able to see the Princess as she goes inside her mother in law's Palace.

The scene changes and we are taken in to a temple and we see a young noble man reciting the Ti-pitakat..Buddhist holy text. The good minister says that this child is a genius . The chief monk says that he remembers anything very quickly. I think this is a foreshadowing of what is to happen in the future. One of the ministers say that when this child was born a blind wise man has shouted a King is born! A King is born! The monk says do not talk of such things here. Our King's coronation will be in a few days.

Back to the ceremony ...The noble Lady's servant calls out to Daskon and gives him a letter given by the Lady. Daskon says he will only be able to give it after the King.s coronation. The servant says Oh but it will be too late by then... what is in that letter....?

After Daskon goes to see the Princess the King gets u and goes to the window and slowly looks out at the ceremony and gets a look at the PRINCESS!!!!! OHOH where is this going....

TO BE CONTINUED FROM NEXT WEEK ON BOTH Saturdays and Sundays.

Daskon episode 15 recap

4:04 AM 0 Comments

Hello people. First, RIP Squadron Leader JMWN Abeywardena, Flight Lieutenant AADT Amaratunge, Flight Sergeant MWL Priyantha and Corporal WWAN Wijeratna. These are the four air force personnel killed in the Plane crash in Sri Lanka. It happened at 6.20 am 11 minutes after its take off from Katunayake. May they be born in good places in their next life. Leading Aircraftman Lance Coperal Chaturanga was also badly injured and due to these injuries his legs and arm were ampulated. May the Triple Gems guard him and make him recover quickly .

OK from now on due to high demand and good reviews Daskon will be shown on Swaranawahini every weekend at 8.30 pm from the 27th of December. So that is double work for me. I got pissed off today because Chil Wu the Mighty is now only shown on Sundays now instead of that we have Nil Ahasa or something on Saturdays. Boys over Flowers ended yesterday from Monday onwards we have The Heirs on Derana Tv:-) Now to my recap:

The Lady is vomiting. She tells her mother that she carries the Prince's child in her womb. She says not to tell her father yet and that she will wage war against the Prince's future son from the Randoli and make her son get the Kingship. She again hids the seed she has been smelling from her mother.

Pramila Devi arrives in Lanka. The people of the Kandyan Kingdom all flock around the bank of the river her carriage is carried by boat on. A woman says that the rumour is that she looks beautiful as beautiful can be. Here we have a flash back to how Daskon reacted to that news when the Prince's grandfather from his mother's side first spoke of the Princess's beauty. Also we have a flashback on how the good minister reacts violently to the fact that a Princess is coming from Waduga/India/Southern India. Also we see a flashback of Patiya Bandara asking his scholar/astrologer a way to kick these "Wadugas" from Lanka.

We see Patiya Bandara's assistant spying on the carriage the Princess is on. People are chanting Ayubowan Randoli. The father and the relatives get out of the carriage. The Prince's grandfather from the mother's side is told to speak to these relatives and he speaks in Tamil. The father of the future Randoli speaks in broken Sinhalese and says Ayubowan and that he can speak in Sinhalese and understand the language too. The Maha Adikaram says the Prince has sent him to welcome his future relatives. He says but before you enter Sankadagala you have to abide our rules. Saying this he says "only the King can arrive and go around in a golden carriage and no one else so could you please get out of the golden carriage and get on this other carriage which has been sent by the King/Prince. The father is pretty upset but everyone is looking at them so he ways his hand toward the carriage he came in and out comes a pregnant woman! Everyone is shocked and they look around to see why the hell a pregnant woman has been sent to be the Queen of Lanka but wait she gets out smile and waves her hand towards the carriage. Well this woman is the Princess's mother and she is pregnant:-) Princess Pramila shows her face and flowers are thrown on her and the chants of Ayubowawa are repeated.

Scene changes Daskon tells the King/Prince the Princess is coming. The Prince cooly says its easy to fight Patiya Bandara but his helpers are hard to fight. Daskon says fight them with suspension when the Prince says he doesn't trust anyone in the Palace. Daskon again says would my Prince like to meet the Princess now.
The Prince says she is coming from India to Sankadagala to meet ,so why should I go and meet her let her come and meet me. Daskon is embarrassed so he says maybe its because the King is different from a normal person ( he kinda admits he kinda waited to see the Princess). Well maybe we should compare the Lady of Monnarawila and the Princess. The Prince hammers a food or gold platter real hard and stares at Daskon as if he wants to run a dagger through him. We have flashbacks of how the Lady looks at the Prince in the first episode and we hear the letter he sent her. The Prince looks very emotional and continuously hear the Prince saying "Am I living in a Palace or is this a Prison." The scene changes and the Princess is carried in a open carriage to the Palace. And if u wanna know she is beautiful (Puja Umarshankar is the actress)....to be continue next Saturday on Swarnawahini at 8.30 pm......let's meet again then....and guys the drama would catch up and be more active when the drama is shown on both Saturdays and Sundays:-)

Daskon episode recap 14

8:06 AM 0 Comments
Happy Vap poya day all Buddhist around the world. Hope you spent the day in Buddhist religious activities. Good luck for those who are doing their O/L's this coming week..do ur best guys:-) .I got holidays and it will go on till the 12th of December because of the Presidential election. So hope Mr Mahinda Rajapaksha wins because I want my country to be like Singapore and not like Sri Lanka back in the 90's with the civil war. So hope Sachithra Senanayake's bowling results would be positive and that he will be able to play at the ICC World Cup.....may the Triple Gems guard him. Guys pls hope that Sri Lanka would win tomorrows match against England's cricket team. Now to the recap...

Strange today instead of the usual drama song we see past events from the time the Prince is called playful till last weeks ending episode . After that finishes a new song starts playing - interesting especially since it shows new characters.

We hear screams from the Patiya Bandara hideout. Patiya Bandara has gone crazy. He is smashing everything in his sight. He calls his assistant and screams at him and asks you gave the Prince my auspicious time didn't you? His personal scholar comes and shouts there is only one sun, one planet and one galaxy and one set of stars. So through astrology only one auspicious time could be decided on. Patiya Bandara screams and asks his scholar/astrologer why is there one heir? Why is a King allowed to have two doli's(Queens)? Why do that Waduga (Indian) scrap g to be the Queen? He stole my everything. I am a Lankan my mother is so and so is my father, grandfather and ancestors but that Waduga Prince gets all of my inheritance, Royal life, Royal food and my Kingship. His mother tries to calm him down. He screams at his mother. Its you who was taken to the Palace as the King's wife on golden leaves. Its you who was honoured so who is now like this. My scholar/astrologer I don't want to be King make an auspicious time to give my mother the rightful position she deserves as Queen mother.

Scene changes the nilamá of Monnarawila ( the Prince's girlfriend's father) is not sent home after the meeting but kept waiting as the Prince has asked him to speak to him. The Maha adikaram( main minister) starts speaking to him. The Lady's father speaks how close connected their family is to the Royal palace. He recalls how the King used to come to their house which lead to the Prince meet his daughter. The Maha adikaram gets up all of a sudden and we see he doesn't like where this is heading. He says that the Wadduga Princess with pomp never seen before. We see the Monnarawila nilamá is upset. The son of a bitch ( I hate this asshole) maha adikaram rubs it in and says at least your daughter can be Yakaladoli and that name would go to the Kapitipola family of Monnarawila. Kapitipola nilamá gets pissed off and walks out of the palace without talking to the Prince.

Now at Monnarawila the Lady is supposed to be vomiting. I use the word suppose because we see she is smelling some kind of seed/ which is obviously making her vomit. As soon as her mother comes in she hids the seed. Then she talks rubbish and finally she speaks of how Kuveni ( first Queen of Lanka) ran away from the Palace with King Vijaya's two children and she stresses the fact that she had the two children with her while King Vijaya married a Indian Princess......To be continued we end here let's met again next week for recap number 15:-)

Yeh hai Mohabbatein aka Me Adarayai on Sirasa TV

8:58 AM 0 Comments

At last a good Indian drama on Sirasa TV. Well "Swapna" with Suraj and Swapna and their dream to make her a police officer in India is alright but its melodramatic. Firstly Swapna with her melodramatic acting looking at her mother in law like a fellow who is mad just doesn't appeal me . The story itself is old fashion and gives a stereotypical view on indians. I mean Sri Lanka has gone way off from "girls shouldn't study" mother in laws. On the other hand Me Adarayai gives a more modern feminist but yet cultural view on India.

Raman and Ishita marry because of Ruhi but they hate each other. This makes sense to why they don't sleep on the same bed and unlike Swapna Ishita is an ambitious woman who does what she wants. She has her own will unlike Swapna who goes along with anything as long as her family is happy. She only gets some energy on her face when she does Police stuff. Ishita and Raman unlike Suraj and Swapna always fight and have fun other than by holding each other's hands or getting into accidents in Jaipur.

To me Ishita and Raman represent a better couple than Suraj and Swapna. I love the way each episode shows a special side of either one of the characters rather than only conflict. Raman as the loving father and husband is a cuter storyline:-) I love the way he dresses Ishita and get jealous over Mani's and Ishita's friendship. In that sense Raman and Ishita's love story is more real for Sri Lankans than Swapna.

Overall Me Adarayai /Yeh hai Mohabbatein is a must watch for my viewers because it is something more than a soap opera it is a book (custody) turned into a Tv series maybe this is a reason why it has such a attractive storyline. I have to point out that the TV series is far better than the book which portrayed Ishita is a different way. My Sri Lankan blog viewers can watch Yeh hai Mohabbatein/Me Adarayai on Sirasa tv every weekday at 9.30 pm others could watch it online on Star Plus in Hindi and read the recap online.:-)

Daskon episode 13 recap

8:20 AM 0 Comments
Sorry that I couldn't post last week but Jaffna seemed too awesome to miss. I thank my blog viewers for reading my blog every week. I will upload some more reviews on some recently watched K dramas later this week. Well Jaffna was awesome . All my bloggers must go there some way or another cause its solo beautiful and the huge Rio Ice cream store is too much to miss. Well time for recap.

An unofficial royal meeting is taking place in the palace and the Prince attends it. Here the bad minister is named the second / assistant minister to the main minister under the new King. The minster stands in front of the Prince and the the Prince see former moment were the bad minister stood against him and how he spoke for Patiya Bandara. Then the Prince asks the main minister if there had been riots against the King before and the minister replies yes. The minister says there were riots/coup against the Prince's grandfather and it failed. The Prince then asks the bad minister who is the rightful heir to the throne ? The bad minister says the son of the Randoli is the rightful heir to the throne. With this the Prince asks the main minister if anyone other than the rebels were punished at his grandfather's time. The minister says that ministers were punished and killed for supporting the rebels. With this the Prince gives a dangerous look at the bad minister gets down from the throne and and tells the ministers not to speak of official state problems at an unofficial meeting.

Somewhere else in a village the Prince's girlfriend's servants get down from a carriage and there is something fishy here. The main servant gives her assistant the sari their mistress gave her and a letter telling the assistant keep this with you let's meet again at Sankadagala /Kandy ( the Palace is situated here).

The bad ministers's assistant speaks to Patiya Bandara's servant and tells him to tell his master that the date of the rebel should be postponed because that is the day that the Prince's coronation is. The servant mutters something under his breath and goes out and this is where we end this week...to be continued next week at 8.30 pm on Swaranawahini.

Daskon episode 11 recap

8:00 AM 0 Comments
Guys next week I wouldn't be able to do recaps cause I'm going to Jaffna on a school trip. That's a nine hour trip by train. I am going to miss Boys over flowers, Yi San, Chil Wu,My Girl and This is love but want to do.....will post pis on Jaffna and what to expect of it if you are going there....also guys I want to thank my readers for my blog just past 1000 viewers. Time for Daskon recap...

The scroll is opened by the main minister and it states the Portuguese ship carrying the Princess is on its way. Most ministers agree that the Randoli /Queen should come from Monarawila wallawa even the Buddhist monk point this out.

The scene changes and now we are in the Queen mother's chamber. They are getting ready for the princess's arrival. The father of the Queen mother shows his distress on the news that the Monarawila podi Kumarihami being the Randoli. The Queen mother smiles and says that will never happen because the ministers all want their daughters to be Randolis and so always the Princess will be the on from India. They say that a new building is being built for these people. We also see jealousy in the Queen Mother's eyes over the new Queen's mother.

The Prince's girlfriend is vomiting it away and I thought it was all lies to be the Queen but it seems to be true. She gets into a trance kind of thing where she screams she is from Kuveni's( first Queen under King Vijaya who was later abolished its said her children who ran away to the forest became the Veddhas of Sri Lanka). She keeps muttering until she says " I will give birth to the Prince's son. I was not good enough to be the Queen but as Yakaladoli I will give birth to the successor of the Kandyan Kingdom." This bit was so sad since I kind of feel that she just might not become the Yakaladoli.

The bad minister is making plans he says the rebel might work but Patiya Bandara's people are stupid and who knows what he will do. The uncle I spoke about in the earlier episode says Patiya Bandara's mother the Yakala doli is also in the caves with him. The bad minister says he will go along with the plan.

We see a scene of Patiya Bandara's mother feeding him and he says food that you feed me is more tasty than the rich food in the Palace. He expresses his anger about the fact that his father the King not accepting his mother as the Queen. He makes his worker say all about what his mothers caste, race and status is.....it stops here let's meet again the week after the next ......hope you enjoy this recap:-)

Daskon episode 10 recap

8:16 AM 0 Comments
Time for recap no? Don't know what time Heirs is on TV Derana...but have to tell u pls watch My Girl it is superb so like Full House. So if u miss Young Jea and Han jian watch My Girl and love Yo Ri and Gang Chan. For my Sri Lankan followers watch it every weekend at 7.00pm on Swarnawahini. Now the recap:

The Prince is PISSED OFF.. he is shaking with fury and Daskon is again the witness. The Prince shouts my heart is on fire Daskon! I can't do what I want. What is the point of living. Daskon says do you know Mr Nox and the Prince's racial expression is hilarious ( he is like WTF is he?) . Daskon smiles and says he was a prisoner under your grandfather under that anger he told that the Sri Lanka/Ceylon Monarch is a dictator. This not true my Prince it is tradition and the rules which the King follows not his own will. Daskon says the Prince read this letter and see for yourself why my heart is on fire. Daskon disagrees and the Prince shouts out "You are the damn man who writes down all the gossip found in all 4 sides of my palace."

Daskon looks shocked and the Prince tell him just write it on your memory book not in your record book. To this Daskon smiles and starts to read the letter and we see that he is shocked. He starts to read and the Prince is embarrassed and its so sad and cute.
The Prince starts to see his lady continuously while Daskon recites the poem. In it she did not need a palace to be a part of the Prince and that she wants his warmth, love and her heart aches for him.
Daskon looks at the Prince and says you made love and then the Prince says a King needs a place but to a man needs just love for it. Daskon then smiles and says

"Behold, Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet were not in Venice but in Kandy. You would have lived in London but if you had known you would have wanted to live in Ceylon. Here is the tale of Kundasala and Monnarawila Kumarihami. My dear Shakespeare the war/fight wasn't between the the two families of fair Verona but between Monnarawila and the Royal Palace."

To this the Prince smiles and we see his mood is better. In the main hall of Palace the ministers are arpt a meeting and the Maha Sangha arrives. The Maha Sangha, the good minister and the bad minister point out that bringing Princesses from India is bad for the country. The Maha Sangha says that there are no Arahaths in Ceylon any more and the danna is not given by the King. The main minister says we will bring Arahaths from Saim and do the ceremony. Others point out that the last King brought sangha from Burma to do the ceremony last time. The sangha says Minister Kapitipola tell everyone what happened last time. The minister says the ceremonies were not allowed because of people who live in the street Shar the Waduga people live. Everyone is pissed off at this and then everyone one is shputing and just then an important message arrives and I think the Princess Pramila has arrived.......let's meet again next Saturday 8.30 pm.

Daskon episode 9 recap

9:19 AM 0 Comments
Getting to business again recap number 9. Watching My girl right now and planing to go to Jaffna on the 20th November so busy as ever. Guys Boys over Flowers is going to finish and the next up is City Hunter and this is the rumour. A new drama about the Portuguese invasion in Sri Lanka is going to run on Hiru Tv it looks good I may do recaps for this too... "Sugala Devi" the strong queen who fought the most powerful man in Sri Lanka King Parakramabahu is also going to be shown on Hiru TV in the near future. This of course is a very feminist drama and a must watch for the oppressed women of our country. For if a single woman fought with her army against a King why can't we against the Patriarchy specially when there are more women in our population than men. OK time for recap:-)

Bad news: Patiya Bandara the Yakdoli or the second wife's son has gathered a large army and has hidden himself in the forest ready to attack the capital possibly on the coronation day of the new King. Everyone is anxious about the outcome of such a move specially the good minister and the Buddhist priest in episode 8.

New scene and we see Patiya Bandara's army and they are all training in the traditional fighting of Sri Lanka "Angampora"( like Karate, Judo and Wusho we also have a martial art and it has a method where you attack a person with fast shots to their nerves either killing them or making them unconscious- it is still practiced in Sri Lanka) . To me the army seems smaller than the army of Sankadalagala( Kandy). One high officer who is the uncle of Patiya Bandara points this out and asks to talk to him. It seems the bad minister Yalagoda knows about the whole plan. The servant/lieutenant says do not speak to my lord in that way we are like worms under his feet talk with some honour to our lord. Well if his airs are like this before he gets the throne just imagine him when he becomes King!

Well we see Patiya Bandara or as they call him Patiya Bandara Deviyo is eating a buffet and they show him eating 32 two dishes continuously. This is so disgusting anyway his uncle gets to talk to him alone. Patiya Badara has a heart though he says even though the prince and he were born from different wombs they are sons of the same father. This kingship will be a burden for the little kid. He is just a boy and so playful. Even though he looks all stately and all but he has a soft heart and is loving. My heart just goes out to him...the uncle just stares at him and says lets go along with the plan.

The plan as the good minister said in the beginning is to attack on the coronation day but the uncle says we will attack days after coronation when the army will turn to their side. Patiya Bandara looks confused but then he says "you are telling me to let the people see than the Prince is a bad king and then attack to kick him out of the palace." Yes says the uncle and here we finish today....let's meet again next Saturday for episode 10 recap.

Daskon episode 8 recap

9:07 AM 0 Comments
Time for the next recap....just started watching Chil Wu the Mighty and My Girl they are good K Dramas but all my Sri Lankan blog readers you guys should watch Podi Mama ( small uncle) it is hilarious. Its like Jehanr on TV. It is every week days on ITN at 7.30. Its about a rich uncle who is forced to act blind because his nieces and nephews are trying to get all his money by forces and even not letting him marry:-) Alright let's get to the recap...

The good minister goes to the temple to met the monk and he is invited to see a boy being taken in to be a monk. He says yes that's good more and more boys should join to be monks. I things this is with the problem of Christianity spreading. Well he doesn't know that Anagarika Dhramapalla would take necessary steps in the future to futher spread Theravadi Buddhism in the country.
Next scene: Daskon takes the letter to the noble lady's house. The servant asks Daskon where the Prince is and then Daskon looks at all his stuff and then says he was in my bag but now he is not there no? He was in my bag but he must have fallen on the way here. The noble lady becomes happy again that the Prince has sent her a letter and that she wants to go where the Prince and she always met to rated it( the waterfall).

She reads the letter and the poem is longer than I wrote last Saturday it also has a section on how the Prince is going to kick all these traditions aside and come to her and make her his wife. She continuously sees the Prince and she imagines him carrying her away to make love like in the first episode. The servants watch on.

The good minister speaks to the monk and we see that the whole of the Kandyan kingdom is not happy about a Queen from India. The monk says this is all because the Kings don't talk to the Maha Sanga like they used to before taking decisions. The minister points out that the dead King has ordered this even before he was on his dead bed. The monk says its not time to shout at dead people its time to do something about this.

Well have to point something out according to Sri Lankan history the Prince was not that much of a good King as there were conspiracies in his time...let's meet again next Saturday for Episode 9 recap:-)

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie review

2:44 AM 0 Comments

Adichie has done it again she has created another master piece….

Having read Adichie’s “Half of a Yellow Sun” and having studied it for my Literature syllabus I fell in love with her books. All these years at school and home I was only exposed to English books written by English men and women having done David Copperfield and The Great Gatsby alongside Shakespeare I imagined the world through a white middle class point of view. Imagining lemonade stalls and blond hair children became the norm and Asia/Africa didn’t seem as cool as what was written by Enid Blyton.

Well all this changed with A/L year Literature syllabus and mainly because of Adichie’s books. She made everyday life of a person living in the tropics look as sophisticated as the West. When you read her you simply travel to India and Sri Lanka although her story is set in Nigeria. We start to deal with everyday issues such as race and civil wars rather than what the weather is like as spoken always in British books.
In” Half of a Yellow Sun” we meet Olanna, Odenigbo, Ugwu and Baby as they face the Biafran Civil War. In her latest book Americanah we meet Ifemula and Obinze as they fight for their love in a new Nigeria. The first difference I saw was the how much Nigeria has changed from 1960’s (Half of a Yellow Sun) to the 2000’s (Americanah). Nsukka the little university town has gone to ruins in Americanah unlike how it was portrayed in “Half of a Yellow Sun” where the Odenigbo the mathematics professor taught in the university there.

Adichie’s plot has also changed into being more complex in Americanah where a young girl chases her dream and finds out how America is not what it seems. Race is a huge issue in Americanah unlike in “Half of a Yellow Sun” where the plot is was situated in Nigeria where race didn’t matter. We see a lot of racial discrimination in Americanah where it plays a huge part in the plot. In this book it’s more to do with love and race than civil war and yes there is a sharp contrast in cultures especially in South East Asia when compared with Nigeria, this is mainly because our culture is very conservative.

Richard the white man from “Half of a Yellow Sun” who wanted to be Biafran and talk Igbo and also he is also the boyfriend of Kainene is converted into Curt in Americanah who falls in love with Ifemula and I suspect that this is because of his “white guilt”

Overall if I had not read Adichie before and compared her with other writers such as Achebe then I would have being tricked into thinking it is another writer. Throughout Americanah we see that Adichie has developed from writing Purple Hibiscus her first novel to her new and complex novel. Americanah is a must read book for all those people out there who read for the love of books. Be warned that when you start reading it you can’t stop because it is addictive.

Daskon – Back story. Set in 1707 – 1721

10:59 AM 0 Comments

Well this is for all those Daskon fans out there. This post would tell you what the back story of Daskon and who the Crown Prince Pundasala is.
Spoilers ahead….be careful cause u may be tempted to know moreJ
Daskon is a French descendant Sri Lankan Prime Minister who fell in love with Pramila Devi (Sri Lankan Queen). It is a story of love, betrayal, power and royalty. The Kandyan Kingdome (1600 – 1782AD) was one of the strongest of its time and it prevented the Dutch and the British from conquering Sri Lanka for 19 years.
The Crown Prince is Vira Parakrama Narendra Singha the last Sinhala King of Sri Lanka. He was the son of King Vimaladharamasurya II. The Prince also named as Crown Prince Pundasala came to throne when he was 17 years and reigned for 32 years. He devoted himself to the furtherance of literature and religion and lived in peace with the Dutch Invaders. He was from the “House of Dinajara”. His coronation happened in 1707 after the death of his father as depicted in the drama.

He reigns from 4th June 1707 to 13th May 1739. Since he had no children his wife’s brother Sri Vijaya Rajasinha a Nayakkar nationality from South India became King.
Well in the drama much is not said of Daskon and so it is in history but I’m sure Jackson Anthony would fill in these spaces as the drama develops.  The biggest fear I have is that the friendship between the Crown Prince lather the King would be destroyed through the love that emerges between Queen Pramila and Daskon. I think there will be many crying scenes where we will have to cry buckets and the good Crown Prince will turn to a bad King Narendra Singha in my eyes especially since the drama is named Daskon. So the obvious protagonist is Daskon who has to be portrayed well.

In an interview with the program House Full Jackson Anthony pointed out that the love story between Pramila and Daskon was always known as the forbidden love story and was never spoken about but in reality it was a human and emotional story and he pointed out that his aim in this drama Daskon is to portray it more than just a forbidden love story. Ha can’t wait for the plot to develop because the history is interesting but can be boring sometime. Hope the pace of the overall drama increases so that we can get involved in the drama.
