Drama Queen

Okay its official I hate this drama. I hate the fact that they put a woman this low. I mean come on Upala was such a nice girl. Why the hell did they have to make her pregnant? I know that she was obsessed with Kalum but come one would she give her virginity (I am being quite frank here) up for that!!!

She was of course Kalum’s little puppy and she was always behind Kalum but she is not a jackass!! She was always such a nice girl but the screen writers destroyed this girl. I am being conservative here of course. I have my views that sex should be after marriage and that is that but when it happened to Upala it was just unbelievable.

On the other hand Kalum is being such an ass. He is choosing money over true love and he is so cool about it. Upala is also not at all seeing the truth. I mean it is so annoying when this kind of crap happens in dramas. Yes I know I don’t know much about love at all but come on do women become that dumb when they in love? Don’t they have priorities? Which woman would give up her virginity for a guy who is to marry another woman?

This drama is extremely patriarchal.  It puts the men above the women. Now see the traditional Sri Lankan society ranges women from Madonna to Whore. Upala was of course the Madonna and now the writers have pulled her do to the so called whore level.  They could have just made Upala keep her last shred of dignity but no they wanted to pull her down that low. I am talking about most Sri Lankan’s view on this episode and these are not my personal views. I personally believe it is none of our business but at the end of the day what do these dramas give our young audience.

Most hilariously the pulled Upala lower by making her say “O I want to commit suicide! O mother kill me”. Come on screen writers this is not ROMEO AND JULIET!!!! If you cannot right a proper story just give up writing. This drama trust me is the most horrible drama I have watched in ages.  In this drama women are portrayed as love slaves even Varuni is such a thing. Sudu Hamineh is the only women who stood her ground as one strong woman but they kicked her out of the show.

 All the women in this drama are so one sided. Kalum’s mother is an “only my son is right “woman. Varuni is a “He is my guy I am having him some how even by hiding his wrongs”. Varuni’s mother is a Tiger mother. Upala’s mother is “my daughter is my life I will hid her wrongs”. Chamarie is a greedy woman. At the end of the day there is nothing much worth in this drama to watch. Well may be its time to bid adieu to this drama and wait for My Love from Another Star probably next month.

Yes it is finally happening. I always wanted it to happen because I always thought that Mayantha was a better match for Upala. Now that it is finally happening I feel extremely sad for her. Earlier this week we saw Mayantha asking Upala if she would marry him to which Upala politely said no. However later on we saw that Kalum’s parents wanting to hurry the wedding of Varuni and Kalum and Kumarasiri or Varuni’s father said that it will happen quickly. He also said that he gave up his dream of starting a Food Company. So Mayantha’s Food recipes are finally safe.

In the mean time Mayantha tracks down the thug who tried to rob his food recipes. The thug finally says that Kumarasiri was behind all this all the while.  Upala and Kalum in the mean time share an intimate moment. All of a sudden Kalum pulls Upala for a kiss (of course it seemed like that – they didn’t show it). However this scene changes and they show us a clock which to me showed that Kalum and Upala shared an intimate moment. Kalum gets a call and well it’s his parents saying that the wedding is happening in a few weeks time.

When asked if Kalum did not like to get married to Varuni by his parents he just replies “I have no problem with it”.  So everything is finalized and Kalum leaves Upala in tears. It is only Mayantha who is there to comfort her.

In the up coming episodes Varuni’s parents find out that Upala gave blood to Varuni. They plan and try to give Upala 4 laks as a payment. Upala just says “if you are ready to give me anything give me back my blood”. Kalum also comes to meet Upala in the usual place and tells her that they are not one but two and have different needs and wants. So saying well I am breaking up with you.

Upala’s life has now become hell and so she tells her mom everything. Kalum’s parents are called and well they look sorry but don’t look like they will give a solution. In the mean time Mayantha’s wedding is planned by his mom and he seems to be going to the point of no return.

Anyhow in a sneak review video we see Mayantha and Upala sitting on a bench in a seaside resort and he tells her “nothing can break us apart now Upala”. Upala to happily look at a flower that Mayantha gave her and smiles. This may be where this love story would end with Upala and Mayantha marrying. I mean they are a perfectly matching couple and we have seen them as a couple before in Ran Tharu on ITN. I always hated Kalum and his selfish ways. He really didn’t know how to treat a woman who loved him.  If Kalum’s parents don’t change their decisions and Varuni’s father isn’t taken to jail by Mayantha then we could expect Uthum Pathum end in a happy tone. It is also important to notice that Upala gets to know that Kalum asked for the Food recipes because he wanted to give them to Kumarasiri…..so I don’t believe she will trust Kalum ever again. 

If Uthum Pathum ends then the next drama would most probably be My Love from another Star starring Kim Soo Hyun who is famous in Sri Lanka at the moment after his role in The Moon Embraces the Sun as King Lee Hwon.

Uthum Pathum has been show on Sirasa TV for quite sometime. I never personally liked due to its lack of a strong plot and under tones of anti feminism. The whole story revolves around Upala and her love for her cousin Kalum. Now Kalum is also loved by Varuni who is also Kalum’s cousin. Kalum’s parents take a loan from Varuni’s parents and to pay this off a marriage is fixed between Varuni and Kalum. On the other hand Kalum has already given his heart to Upala. Upala is the stark contrast of Varuni being all goody good – also she is very pretty. However Upala has another person who secretly loves and protects her and this is Mayantha. Mayantha’s mother is a friend of Upala’s mother. He is the owner of Sri Lankan Food Company and has the food recipes which many want to get their hands on – including Varuni’s father. He is also Upala’s boss as she works in his Company.

However in the recent episodes we have seen that Kalum has a liking towards Varuni as Upala becomes more of a fighter than a damsel of distress. Kalum wants to go a head with his and Varuni’s marriage while he also wants to continue his affair with Upala. Moreover he is lying to her and asks her to rob Mayantha’s food recipes. However Mayantha trusts Upala and give her his recipes to safeguard since he doesn’t trust his fiancé Chamarie who is marrying him for money.

In the end I believe that Mayantha will be able to marry Upala. I just hate Kalum and his third rate ways. He is simply cheating on Upala.  He has some kind of a relationship with Varuni but when Upala doesn’t answer his calls he suspects her. Mayantha is everything Kalum is note. He is not only cute but so kind hearted and caring. He will give Upala his life if it will make her fall in love with him. However the most annoying thing is that Upala can’t do anything on her own.

 Also she is far too good. Any way with a bit of punk given by her cousin Sudu Hamineh, Upala is becoming more of a 21^st century woman. Any how after Uthum Pathum finishes the Kim Soo Hyun’s drama “My Love from another star” will most probably be shown in this time slot.
