Daskon episode 8 recap

9:07 AM 0 Comments
Time for the next recap....just started watching Chil Wu the Mighty and My Girl they are good K Dramas but all my Sri Lankan blog readers you guys should watch Podi Mama ( small uncle) it is hilarious. Its like Jehanr on TV. It is every week days on ITN at 7.30. Its about a rich uncle who is forced to act blind because his nieces and nephews are trying to get all his money by forces and even not letting him marry:-) Alright let's get to the recap...

The good minister goes to the temple to met the monk and he is invited to see a boy being taken in to be a monk. He says yes that's good more and more boys should join to be monks. I things this is with the problem of Christianity spreading. Well he doesn't know that Anagarika Dhramapalla would take necessary steps in the future to futher spread Theravadi Buddhism in the country.
Next scene: Daskon takes the letter to the noble lady's house. The servant asks Daskon where the Prince is and then Daskon looks at all his stuff and then says he was in my bag but now he is not there no? He was in my bag but he must have fallen on the way here. The noble lady becomes happy again that the Prince has sent her a letter and that she wants to go where the Prince and she always met to rated it( the waterfall).

She reads the letter and the poem is longer than I wrote last Saturday it also has a section on how the Prince is going to kick all these traditions aside and come to her and make her his wife. She continuously sees the Prince and she imagines him carrying her away to make love like in the first episode. The servants watch on.

The good minister speaks to the monk and we see that the whole of the Kandyan kingdom is not happy about a Queen from India. The monk says this is all because the Kings don't talk to the Maha Sanga like they used to before taking decisions. The minister points out that the dead King has ordered this even before he was on his dead bed. The monk says its not time to shout at dead people its time to do something about this.

Well have to point something out according to Sri Lankan history the Prince was not that much of a good King as there were conspiracies in his time...let's meet again next Saturday for Episode 9 recap:-)

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie review

2:44 AM 0 Comments

Adichie has done it again she has created another master piece….

Having read Adichie’s “Half of a Yellow Sun” and having studied it for my Literature syllabus I fell in love with her books. All these years at school and home I was only exposed to English books written by English men and women having done David Copperfield and The Great Gatsby alongside Shakespeare I imagined the world through a white middle class point of view. Imagining lemonade stalls and blond hair children became the norm and Asia/Africa didn’t seem as cool as what was written by Enid Blyton.

Well all this changed with A/L year Literature syllabus and mainly because of Adichie’s books. She made everyday life of a person living in the tropics look as sophisticated as the West. When you read her you simply travel to India and Sri Lanka although her story is set in Nigeria. We start to deal with everyday issues such as race and civil wars rather than what the weather is like as spoken always in British books.
In” Half of a Yellow Sun” we meet Olanna, Odenigbo, Ugwu and Baby as they face the Biafran Civil War. In her latest book Americanah we meet Ifemula and Obinze as they fight for their love in a new Nigeria. The first difference I saw was the how much Nigeria has changed from 1960’s (Half of a Yellow Sun) to the 2000’s (Americanah). Nsukka the little university town has gone to ruins in Americanah unlike how it was portrayed in “Half of a Yellow Sun” where the Odenigbo the mathematics professor taught in the university there.

Adichie’s plot has also changed into being more complex in Americanah where a young girl chases her dream and finds out how America is not what it seems. Race is a huge issue in Americanah unlike in “Half of a Yellow Sun” where the plot is was situated in Nigeria where race didn’t matter. We see a lot of racial discrimination in Americanah where it plays a huge part in the plot. In this book it’s more to do with love and race than civil war and yes there is a sharp contrast in cultures especially in South East Asia when compared with Nigeria, this is mainly because our culture is very conservative.

Richard the white man from “Half of a Yellow Sun” who wanted to be Biafran and talk Igbo and also he is also the boyfriend of Kainene is converted into Curt in Americanah who falls in love with Ifemula and I suspect that this is because of his “white guilt”

Overall if I had not read Adichie before and compared her with other writers such as Achebe then I would have being tricked into thinking it is another writer. Throughout Americanah we see that Adichie has developed from writing Purple Hibiscus her first novel to her new and complex novel. Americanah is a must read book for all those people out there who read for the love of books. Be warned that when you start reading it you can’t stop because it is addictive.

Daskon – Back story. Set in 1707 – 1721

10:59 AM 0 Comments

Well this is for all those Daskon fans out there. This post would tell you what the back story of Daskon and who the Crown Prince Pundasala is.
Spoilers ahead….be careful cause u may be tempted to know moreJ
Daskon is a French descendant Sri Lankan Prime Minister who fell in love with Pramila Devi (Sri Lankan Queen). It is a story of love, betrayal, power and royalty. The Kandyan Kingdome (1600 – 1782AD) was one of the strongest of its time and it prevented the Dutch and the British from conquering Sri Lanka for 19 years.
The Crown Prince is Vira Parakrama Narendra Singha the last Sinhala King of Sri Lanka. He was the son of King Vimaladharamasurya II. The Prince also named as Crown Prince Pundasala came to throne when he was 17 years and reigned for 32 years. He devoted himself to the furtherance of literature and religion and lived in peace with the Dutch Invaders. He was from the “House of Dinajara”. His coronation happened in 1707 after the death of his father as depicted in the drama.

He reigns from 4th June 1707 to 13th May 1739. Since he had no children his wife’s brother Sri Vijaya Rajasinha a Nayakkar nationality from South India became King.
Well in the drama much is not said of Daskon and so it is in history but I’m sure Jackson Anthony would fill in these spaces as the drama develops.  The biggest fear I have is that the friendship between the Crown Prince lather the King would be destroyed through the love that emerges between Queen Pramila and Daskon. I think there will be many crying scenes where we will have to cry buckets and the good Crown Prince will turn to a bad King Narendra Singha in my eyes especially since the drama is named Daskon. So the obvious protagonist is Daskon who has to be portrayed well.

In an interview with the program House Full Jackson Anthony pointed out that the love story between Pramila and Daskon was always known as the forbidden love story and was never spoken about but in reality it was a human and emotional story and he pointed out that his aim in this drama Daskon is to portray it more than just a forbidden love story. Ha can’t wait for the plot to develop because the history is interesting but can be boring sometime. Hope the pace of the overall drama increases so that we can get involved in the drama.

Daskon episode 7 recap

9:36 AM 0 Comments
Ha exams are over but have another sociology assignment ahhaaaa ya I'm busy and I have a rocky internet connection without any cash I wouldn't be able to recharge:-( I am right now reading Chimamenda Ngozi Adichie's latest book Americanah and will write a review of it within this week. Anyways let's get to the review and guys/machangs pls pray to your various gods to help all the people with Ebola and to let it not spread.

The ministers are speaking after the Prince Kunndasaly ( I'm so sorry guys the Crown Prince's name is not Pundasala it sounded solo similar I'm soo sorry about that mistake). The good minister states that just because one King takes a Queen from India doesn't mean all Kings should. It doesn't mean that it should be the tradition of the Kandyan kingdom. "You as the Maha Adikaram has the duty to protect this kingdom in this rare occasion where there is no King in the Kandyan Kingdom." The good minister continues to warn "One day these Waduga people in that particular(can't remember the name) street will one day become a problem to out country" could he be any more truer?

Sad song in the background. We see the Prince all alone and the song in the background has the following meaning "Is this palace a prison Kunndasaly, these traditions are your jail guards. I will never be able to live as I wish." With this the Prince goes to his table and starts to write a letter in poem form. This he recites beautifully as follows:
This palace it a dark place and the only light that it had was you

Our dreams will not happen Mí manike ( sweetheart)
Only when you come to be with me
Will there be light in my life and the palace
The sun will rise in the Sankadagala hills only when
Mí manike(sweetheart) comes to be my wife
But destiny has said otherwise.
( this is in my own words not exactly as sung by the Prince but same meaning)

This is soo sweet and sad. This scene really makes you really sad and shows how much sacrifices a Prince has to make to be a good King he can't even choose whom to fall in love with. He loves the noble lady really and you could that love in the Prince's eyes. This is soooo sad.
Daskon comes running into the room and the Prince gives him a letter and says that this should be sent through a messenger but he thinks the noble lady should get the message through Daskon and the prince gets emotional and his voice cracks a little. Daskon understands the deep trust the Prince has on him. He leaves to Matala to give the letter to Monaragala Wallawa( I think that name also I miss named.sorry)
The sad poem song starts again and just thinking of the noble ladies reaction makes you soo sad their relationship will have no hope - this is so sad and you feel like crying thinking of what their future could have been.

"I will not be able to live without your love and the palace would remain in darkness without you in my life."

Daskon thinks well a lot of messengers could come and go with this letter many times before the Queen arrives and so he stops to write in his journal. He questions everything and why the love affair was not allowed when live is such a strong emotion ( ironic you'll see in the future why)
Daskon writes how a genetic orphan takes a letter to Matala to statue that it will not have a privilege of getting a Randoli/Queen from there.

The noble lady and the servants are caring loudly. The servants when questioned point out that they are caring because the Prince couldn't see the lady before the King died. The noble lady gets so pissed off and kicks the servant away ( in real life the actress who is the servant who always sings is the Prince's elder sister). The servants point out that there is nothing to worry as if the Prince Gabe up on here there are other noble men who will want to marry her. The lady screams and says everything that could possible happen has happened to me and you take the Prince's side that mirror over there knows about me more than any of you.

So all the servants go near the mirror and point of and says this is not like a magic mirror in fairy tales to tell these kindsy of things. What I feared has happened. The lady has looked in the mirror in the earlier episodes to see if she is pregnant. She says the Queen will need a palace and a marriage to make love by to a real lover anything will do. She had believed in the Prince and she gave eherself to him and the servants are shocked.

We have another sad song sung by the servant who sings and we see a flashback on how the Prince carried the noble lady away. So sad this is such a sad episode.
Daskon somewhere in the forest is yet questioning why life is what it is. To be continued next Saturday......

Daskon episode 6 recap

9:56 AM 0 Comments
OK this week flew by no? Well Sri Lanka had a long weekend this week Saturday,Sunday,Monday &Wednesday:-) Maybe this is why it feels like the week flew by:-) Haaa its a relief that Sri Lanka is having our own history dramas because all these years we knew who King Sukjong and Yi San were but knew little of the Kings who reigned in Sri Lanka when the Dutch and the Portuguese were in Lanka. Korean drama is good but we need our own history to no? Well OK TV Derana is finishing their history series Swarnapali and is starting a new drama Dombi(I think that's the name) maybe I'll do recaps for that too but I'm watching Podi Mama at that time maybe I'll do recaps for that. Time for recap:

Setting is in Monarawila Wallawa the Prince's girlfriend's( Bandarawela Podi Kumarahami) house. The girlfriend is really pissed off she gives the Indian saree/shawl to her servant for her wedding. The servant is freaked out she says she is from a low cast and can't wear such things but the noble lady insists and the servant shyly puts it on and the noble lady says she is so pretty that she will find a hubby in no time:-) The whole wallawa is in chaos and I think everyone is thinking the Prince is going to name the Queen/Randoli from this wallawa. The servant tells the noble lady that a wallawa chosen to have the Queen usually is given specail attention such as palace guards everywhere to show people this is the wallawa in which the future Queen lives in.

Yes! My guess is right Kapitipola nilamà is the noble lady's father and he arrives in his carriage with his guards and whippers* to inform people that a minister is arriving. He is pissed off he tells all the workers. To get the hell out of here and tells the wife/Kumarihami to come inside. BAD NEWS I see that the Prince has not arrived at the wallawa so the noble lady is not going to be the Queen/Randoli.

The Palace meeting hall is full with ministers from all regions of the country and the Queen mother's father arrives. The maha adikaram greats him to take seat. The Queen mother's father tells the minsters that the Princess Pramila from the Suriya clan the nearest to the Indian royal family is coming on a Portugal ship in two weeks. The minister who supports Patiya Bandara(I think his name is yalapola I wrote about him in episode 4. I'll call him bad minister after this.) ask how his sickness is. The father says well the Lankan ayurwadic treatment is better than in India and the bad minister l says I'm sure you should bring a good doctor from India to which the father says the Lankan ones agree much better. Here he tells the Princess's name which Pramila Devi here we get a real close up on Daskon I'm sure this is a foreshadowing of what's going to happen.

The minister the Prince likes and the one who is loyal to the Prince (Alawida nilamà I think) says who is going to pay for the expenses of this. To this the maha adikaram says the Portuguese governed in Colombo will pay for all this. The good minister I'll call Alawida minister that after this is pissed off he doesn't like all this rubbish I think he wants to see the Prince to marry a Sri Lankan noble lady as Randoli. He says "ya ya we'll have to pay the taxes" the bad minister agrees to this. (First time you are good no?) The father gets up to go and calls a nilamà and tells the other look at this head gear he is wearing the bad minister says its form Waduga desha (India or a district in there). He says everyone will get gifts like this from Waduga desha** when the Crown Prince marries Princess Pramila. The good minister then gets solo pissed off he says "ya the whole country wants gifts from your Waduga desha no?" The others start to look shocked and wola! the Omaha adikaram screams the good ministers name out.....oppps..To be continued next week....:-) see you then:-)

Daskon episode 5 recap

8:21 AM 0 Comments
Episode 5 is to start and here we go. Sorry about the delay guys but my data package expired and so I had to renew it before uploading this recap.I would like to say that this episode was fun. The most hilarious thing in this episode is that everyone keeps on thinking that the Crown Prince is the King, which he is not since he still hasn't had the coronation ceremony. So here is what happens:

The scene starts where it finished last week and the ministers leave the palace to rest and one maha adikaram (minister) comes to tell Daskon that the Crown Prince told him to meet the vistors who have arrived at the vistors hall in the main Palace. Daskon seems to not like this and tells the minster to meet them. The minster laughs and tells you meet them minister Daskon because the Prince Pundasala says so I'm just the messenger then he leaves.
Daskon leaves and comes to the vistors hall to meet two people dressed in red and from the look of them they are Catholic priests. Guess what I am 100 percent right. This part is hilarous the elderly priest says some thing in a foriegn language. He says Ja ma apple or something and I know thats French and I also know I written it wrong;-) . Daskon looks baffled he just doesn't know what to say. He speaks in Sinhalese and the priest still speaks in French and then the younger priest tells the elder one that Daskon speaks no French. Then he tells Daskon that they come from Goa and are Priest Joshep Vass's students they come to Lanka to preach the "truth" the fact that there is only "one God". This time Daskon looks gone he just keeps looking at them shocked. Is it because he doesn't like it or what?
He comes back to his sences to say he knows about them and how they spread a European religion. He says there is no King in Sri Lanka now just a Crown Prince who is awaiting his coronation. Learning this they say sorry but the elder preist asks a question which the other translates as "why don't u know your mother language?" To this Daskon laughs and says he is a "genetic orphan" as his mother is Portugese his father is French but he was born in Kandy and knows only Sinhalese but he says he is a poet. The younger priest says then he is not a orphan if he is a poet and tells him to show them the island Daskon says he will tell the minister about this and tells them to come with him.

The Prince is alone in his room and the maha adikaram arrives the Prince says he wants to go to Matala with Daskon but he is always running around with people and writting poems. To this the minister laughs and says you told him to do so. The minster points out that the Prince can only go in his carriage to meet the people after coronation but can't go anywhere else until he is the King. The Prince is furious and screams what bloody rules are these! The minister says they aren't bloody rules they are ones with meaning which other Princes have followed for centuries in the Kandyan Kingdom. The Prince says then show this in the law books and the minister gets angry and says "I the Maha Adikaram is the law book my family for centuries have carried out these traditions and even at your father's coronation I was there.

Ok I'm waiting for the Prince's girlfriend to say something today and yah my wish was fulfilled! Here she is pissed off staring at the mirror and her servant asked why my lady doesn't wear the sari the Prince presented her she goes crazy here and I was shocked...and it ends here she says let this Prince of yours do whatever he wants.........to be continued next Saturday at 8.30 pm on Swarawhahini Sri Lanka.
My thought:
Well today I expected the Indian Princess to arrive but she didn't. The Prince's girlfriend is a Bandarawela Kumarihamy this means she is one of the highest noble ladies in the land and I think her father is a minister. Also a minister/Nilamà called Kapitipola wanted to meet the Prince which he was not allowed to, Daskon promises he will bring the Prince to Matala to meet him. I have a feeling he may be the father of the Prince's girlfriend. Also the Maha Adikaram is the Chief Minister while a minister is called a Nilamà.
